Details of the UBC Public Scholars Award:

The UBC Public Scholars Award is a component of the UBC Public Scholars Initiative (PSI) designed to create connections, community, and skills for doctoral students who aim to connect their doctoral research with public service.

Funding is available for a maximum of 30-35 new students this year. Students may qualify for renewal for a second year, subject to new PSI funding.

The Scholarship is Opened to?;

Doctoral students at UBC Vancouver (PhD, EdD, and DMA) in years 1-5 and doctoral students at UBC Okanagan in years 1-5
Applicants must have completed a maximum of 48 months of doctoral study by 31 August 2024.

Applicants must be enrolled in a UBC doctoral program by 1 September 2024.

Applicants in their 6th year of doctoral study (48 to 60 months) will only be accepted under extraordinary circumstances.

All students, faculty, and collaborators will need to fill out a questionnaire at the conclusion of their funding or involvement.

Student dissertations, completion rates, and career outcomes will be evaluated as part of the assessment of this pilot initiative.

Duration and Reward of UBC Public Scholars Award
The UBC Public Scholars Award grants $10,000 on two occasions, totaling $20,000 per student, to assist in innovative or collaborative research that the student would not be able to pursue otherwise.

Funding can be utilized for:

Research allowance, which may include funds for professional development or travel related to academic work.
If the student’s current funding source does not permit the alternative project(s), they will receive a stipend.
