The individual will be situated within the Faculty of Medicine at St. John’s University. They will be accountable to the Chief Operating Officer of the Faculty of Medicine for managing operational human resource matters. Additionally, they will report to the Associate Director of Human Resources to ensure adherence to the University’s human resources policy and procedures. This role will involve working closely with the leadership team at the Faculty of Medicine and the department of Human Resources to oversee all human resources initiatives and services for the Faculty of Medicine. The primary objective of this role is to ensure that the objectives of the Faculty are met while also adhering to the University’s human resources policy and procedures. The role encompasses a wide array of human resource responsibilities, such as overseeing employee and labor relations, designing and evaluating job roles, classifying non-academic staff, recruiting and selecting candidates, managing attendance and leave, resolving conflicts and mediating disputes, facilitating return-to-work and accommodation arrangements, providing advice and guidance on human resources programs, policies, and procedures, budgeting salaries, organizing professional development and learning activities, and offering support for various special projects.

The candidate

The preferred applicant should possess a substantial level of expertise and practical experience (5-8 years) in increasingly accountable positions within the field of human resources management. Additionally, they should possess a postgraduate degree in human resources, employment relations, or business, and ideally hold a Human Resources designation. Proficiency in creating and overseeing human resources services and programs, negotiating and resolving disputes, and offering advisory human resources services in a sizable unionized setting is necessary. The ideal applicant will possess exceptional communication skills, demonstrating a robust capacity to attentively listen and persuasively advocate, innovatively resolve problems, and adeptly navigate challenging interactions. Additional capabilities that are necessary encompass exceptional facilitation and presentation abilities, adeptness in dispute resolution, proficiency in change management, and a background in workforce planning and project management. The capacity to establish and sustain robust connections, as well as provide high-quality service to diverse client segments, is of utmost importance in this position.
